"Idolette"
documentary, video, 22min. 2007, produced by Maria Kenny
In this age of pre-packaged pop stars and instant American Idols, we sometimes forget that musicians and singers work hard to hone their talents, often toiling in obscurity for years and years. Exposing the hidden talent of "New York, New York" ("if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere"), the documentary takes us into a world more real than what we find on so-called "reality TV." "Idolette" explores the experiences of smart and sassy women musicians in NYC, from their first flirtations with music, to their encounters with a male-dominated industry, to their feelings about celebrity and the "American Idol" phenomenon. Fame, gender, and the music industry are investigated.
